Skirt for women badminton shuttlers, sexism?!!!

19 Apr

A new ruling that requires female badminton players to wear skirts on court is causing unease among players as they prepare to adopt the new compulsory dress code.

The Indian Open, which begins next Tuesday, will be the last tournament in which women can wear shorts on court before the skirt requirement comes into force on May 1.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced the change in 2009 in a bid to boost the sport’s profile among viewers and sponsors.

Doubles specialist and Indian glamour girl Jwala Gutta, who has always played in skirts, said the new dress code might help to raise interest but players should not be forced to conform.

“You cannot make it compulsory for everyone to wear skirts. It depends on each individual and their comfortable level. I am not sure people will like being told what to wear and what not to,” she said.

World number three Saina Nehwal, the top seed at the April 26-May 1 Indian Open, is one of the many players in India who prefers to wear shorts on court.

Gutta, who won the Commonwealth Games gold last year with her partner Ashwini Ponnapa, endorsed efforts to make the sport more glamorous.

She said that interest in tennis was greater partly because of the attraction of female stars such as Maria Sharapova or the Williams sisters, whose on-court outfits are often as remarked about as their game.

India’s top female tennis player Sania Mirza came under fire from Muslim clerics four years back for wearing short skirts on court.

“Anything that helps makes the sport attractive should be welcomed,” said the 27-year-old Gutta, whose eye-catching looks and daring dress sense on and off court have won her a loyal following at home.

“But instead of enforcing rules on players, the federation should ask sponsors to come up with innovative dresses.

“You can add a lot of colour, experiment with styling and stuff like that. That way it will ensure players’ comfort and take care of the glamour aspect as well.”

Another Indian player, who asked not to be named, said she was uncomfortable with the new ruling.

“I wear skirts or dresses only on special occasions, but never in tournaments,” she said. “Skirts hamper my movement when I play.”

Despite rapid modernisation, India remains a generally conservative country where public displays of sexuality are taboo and women are expected to dress modestly.

5 of Singapore’s best panoramic restaurants…

19 Apr

For as long as we can remember, Jaan and Forlino have held the fort as the most panoramic restaurants in Singapore. Now they’ve got competition.

With Singapore’s landscape forever changed, restaurateurs in Singapore are upping the view ante and planting their outposts on the rooftops of skyscrapers and, at times, on water’s edge, offering unrivaled views, and surprisingly gourmet grubs.

Here are five new restaurants that offer breathtaking views to enjoy as you make your way through the bread basket.

Sky on 57

The setting: The glass-wrapped Sky on 57, on the top floor of the iconic Marina Bay Sands, affords an almost 270 degree view of Singapore’s skyline, stretching from Sentosa, the financial district and the Marina Bay enclave out to Johor Bahru in the horizon. Take in these views from the white-swathed lounge seats dotting the timber-decked outdoor terrace before you adjourn indoor to dine.

For the perfect meal… Go mod. Asian with Justin Quek’s fusion menu of foie gras-studded xiao long bao, Maine lobster tossed in tongue-searing black pepper sauce and the symphony of four desserts including a melt-in-the-mouth pandan-flavored macaroon.

Level 33

The setting: From its perch 156 meters above ground level, the hip Level 33 atop the iridescent Marina Bay Financial Centre affords unrivalled views of the entire Marina Bay enclave. The best seats in the house are those that dot the airy outdoor terrace. But don’t miss the buzz of dining in the rich wood and leather swathed dining space which houses eight tonnes of gargantuan copper-toned microbrewery vats and kettles. Reservations are a must.

For the perfect meal … Go beer dining — with deluxe finger food such as an upscale version of fish and chips, and cubed striploin with roasted garlic and wasabi — along with a glass of blonde lager, pale ale or stout. For a heartier meal, start with a porcini ravioli or braised pig’s tail with snails, then go rustic with a slab of 120-day-aged cote de boeuf.

Barnacles

The setting: When it comes to waterfront dining, you can’t get better than Barnacles at the Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa. Situated in a free-standing hut just a short walk from the hotel’s main building, the unobstructed view of the calming South China Sea from Barnacles is a sight to behold. On Sundays, the timber-decked tables spilling out beyond the tented al fresco area are a favored venue for Sunday Brunch.

For the perfect meal … The mound of chilled seafood platter with heaps of freshly-shucked oysters, poached prawns, leg of Alaskan king crab, juicy black mussels, periwinkles and bulots; the bisque-like rockfish soup crowned with foam of rouille sauce; and mixed grill of beef tenderloin, lamb chop, pork sausage and a jumbo tiger prawn.

Clifford

The setting: Tucked away in a corner of the glitzy Fullerton Bay Hotel and right by the bay, with full view of the neighboring Custom’s House and glitzy skyscrappers — including The Sail and the Marina Bay Financial Centre — and beyond.

For the perfect meal … The best time to come is for Sunday brunch. Tuck into truffle oil-laced oyster shooters, terrine of foie gras, crêpes suzette and sip on Moët & Chandon while gazing out at the skyscrappers that have altered Marina Bay’s architectural landscape. Alternatively, enjoy the nightscape from Clifford at dinner time while you tuck into French classics such as steak tartare and rack of lamb.

iL Cielo

The setting: Sheathed in dark wood and glass, iL Cielo, beside the 24th-story rooftop pool of the Hilton hotel, is one of the quietest spots along Orchard Road to enjoy a tête-à-tête amidst the skyscraper-studded Orchard belt skyline. While we love the chic 32-seater indoor space, we wouldn’t pass on the opportunity to sip Prosecco or tuck into desserts in the romantic poolside lounge seats.

For the perfect meal … Made-to-order burrata cheese doused with Tuscany-made organic extra virgin olive oil served alongside cherry tomatoes and seasonal greens; a disc  of raviolo pasta, which breaks to reveal a savory mess of runny egg yoke, ricotta and spinach; wafer-thin Roman-style pizza topped with lobster carpaccio and a decadent caviar dressing; marbled grilled prime rib-eye that’s free of antibiotics and hormones.

2 seconds Thieves, fast and shrewd

12 Apr

“Caught this with my in-car video survillance camera on 27th March 2011. The culprits, usually a motorcyclist and a pillion rider, tail the driver and smash the car window to snatch items placed inside the car. The attacks are usually launched when the car is stationary by the road side or at traffic light junctions.
Ladies, armor your windows please”

10 stupid things that stupid people do on FACEBOOK/TWITTER

8 Apr

TRULLY TRUE

Social media is named aptly so because it’s a tool to be social. Unfortunately, there are many amongst us who do the most inane things on Facebook and Twitter that makes you roll your eyes, drop your jaw and sometimes is downright pathetic.

1.People who think their every movement should be announced.
We know you’re bored whilst sitting on the toilet. But maybe, instead of tweeting about your bowel movements today, as you always do, maybe you should read about what’s happening in the world on Yahoo! News for a change. Likewise, we don’t need to know how much milk your “hardworking breasts” lactated for your newborn. True story!

2. People who change their relationship statuses every other week.
Make up your mind – are you single? Are you in a relationship? Is it complicated? It’s not too hard

3. People who are in a relationship with their BFF
You might think its so kawaii to be in a relationship with your girlfriend, because you are best friend forever- its NOT! Grow up.

4. Setup Facebook accounts for your 2-year-old kid, or worse, your dog!
We’d like to see the day your dog gets trained to log on to his own Facebook account.

5. Woe is me statuses.
You know those people – ‘my life sucks because my daddy doesn’t want to get me a yacht for my birthday’ or ‘this is the worse day of my life because my husband cancelled on dinner because he had to work to support my extravagant lifestyle.’ Suck it up and stop.

6. Adding People You Don’t Know
We’re not sure what it is – to up your ‘friends’ numbers or to seem like you’re friends with the cool kids. When you add somebody, a pop up screen comes on telling you that you should “only send this request if you know him or her personally.” How do people miss this dis claimer?

7. Write on a Facebook Wall instead of communicating privately
The driving force behind the success of Facebook is…vanity. People love the idea that others are watching what they’re doing. But seriously! We don’t need to know what names you call your boyfriend and what you’re planning to do to him tonight.

8. Tagging drunken pictures of your friends
Yes, it’s funny. But chances are, his boss and his mother are also on Facebook. You don’t want to go out for a big one on a weeknight, have to call in sick for work the day after only to have your boss tell you that he’s already seen photos of you sh*tfaced crawling in the gutter on Facebook. If you don’t want that to happen to you, don’t do it to your friends.

9. Children on Facebook
Facebook bans 20,000 kids from their site everyday, and we’re glad this is done. Parents need to be more diligent with policing their children on social media, and they should be educated on social media etiquette in school. Sexual predators are nothing to joke about.

10. Animal Farms and Fish Tanks
I have a job, I don’t want to feed virtual sheeps. You need to get off your computer and get a life.

Indonesian police went melodically crazy, BUT we love it!!!

6 Apr

One hot, balmy day, Norman Kamaru, while on the job, records himself groovin’ while doing a lip-sync to a hit Hindi song. Somehow or the other, the video found its way to YouTube and somewhat unwittingly, he became an instant star.

The video went viral not just because Norman Kamaru is a member of Indonesian police’s paramilitary wing, the Mobile Brigade, but also because his style is somewhat cool in a ‘I-am-just-chillin’ kind of way.

Norman holds the rank of a first police brigadier in his Mobile Brigade in Gorontalo which is a province in Indonesia’s northern part of Sulawesi.

Fame on YouTube would have been a nice ending of it but a Gorontalo police spokesperson said Monday they were questioning Norman and investigating how the video went online.

Norman, claimed the spokesperson, had allegedly violated ethical codes because his ‘action’ was done while wearing a police uniform and while on the job.

This, plus other comments from senior Indonesian police officers, has stirred a heated debate with more than 7,000 comments on Yahoo! Indonesia’s site following fears that Norman could be punished.

The Hindi song which Norman sings is entitled Chaiyya Chaiyya and was originally sung by Bollywood singers Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi.

The song was introduced in the box-office hit movie Dil Se (1998) starring a young Shahrukh Khan and Malaika Arora.

The movie’s musical director was none other than AR Rahman who went on to win an Oscar in 2009 for his compositons in the worldwide hit movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’in 2008.

Watch the video clip of Norman’s favorite song song taken from the movie ‘Dil Se’ below:

He seems fun and loving…

Potential comedian…

Such policeman , as long as he is doing his job responsibly, unwinding himself like that is absolutely okay, no need to exagerate people…

Malaysia has the worst politicized monopoly system under the Umno, thats why even the LKY of Singapore shrewd enough to break up from them at the earliest stage…

Malaysia is definitely worse than Indonesia. Though Indonesian politic leaders are the most corrupted in the world, they don’t do sex accusations and they are democratically corrupted but you are just worse Malaysia!!!

He’s 23, she’s 47: They seek support on FB for their marriage because families object

4 Apr

A couple is appealing on Facebook for netizens to support their marriage, because their families are objecting to it. Their family members may have good reason to oppose their union — she is 24 years his senior.

STOMPer Sunnyboy007 was surprised to find a public Facebook community page apparently set up by the couple to ‘call out for blessings’.

The Facebook page includes a video where the couple makes a heartfelt appeal to netizens.

In the video, the 47-year-old woman spoke in Mandarin about how both families, including her own daughter, object to her relationship with the 23-year-old. She asked why it was ok for older men to date younger girls and why older women dating younger men faced discrimination.

The STOMPer, who found the page via an email from a friend, said:

“Did anyone receive the same email I did?

“I received an email titled ‘Calling out for Blessings.’ The link led to a Facebook page.

“At first, I thought that it might be some organisation calling out for blessings for Japan, or some other non-profit event.

“To my surprise, I saw some photos of a couple and a video of them seeking for blessings for their marriage due to extreme objection by both families.

“They say that they want the public to stand by them and give blessings to them.

“This is funny. Are they Singapore’s Romeo and Juliet? Or Liang San Bo & Zhu Ying Tai (the ‘Butterfly Lovers’)?

“I find it interesting that a couple would try to reach out to others to support them when their families are opposing this marriage.

“Are they trying to challenge their families? Or is this their strategy to make their families approve their marriage?”
